Last Sunday Athletics ACT held its Annual General Meeting.

During the AGM Athletics ACT were pleased to award Life Membership to Chris Timpson.

Chris has been actively involved as a Coach, Mentor, Administrator and Technical Official in the ACT for over 25 years.

From 1996 to 2018 Chris was Head Coach of the Junior Talent Squad (now the ACT Para-Athletics Talent Squad) where he volunteered approximately 20 hours per week of his time to coaching para athletes.

Chris’ coaching activities have resulted in a number of ACT athletes with a disability progressing to the Paralympics including Louise Ellery, Jayden Sawyer, Erin Walters, and Ari Gesini.  Para athlete Richard Nicholson, who represented Australia in both Powerlifting and Wheelchair Racing, has credited Chris as being a major influence for his success at the elite level.

Chris has been a qualified Technical Official since 2008 dedicating many hours to supporting athletics activities conducted by LAACT, AACT and School Sport, through his voluntary work with the AACT Technical Committee and undertaking the crucial Equipment Officer and Technical Manager roles.

Chris’ long and distinguished service in the Canberra sporting community has seen him receive a number of awards, the following two deserving special mention:

• In 2004 Chris received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for service to sport and to children with disabilities, particularly through his work with the ACT Junior Talent Squad for athletes with a disability; and

• In 2014 Chris was inducted into the ‘ACT Sport Hall of Fame’ as an Associate Member for his service over almost 50 years to the sports of gymnastics and athletics and, in particular, providing exercise and athletic opportunities for people with disabilities.

It gives Athletics ACT great pleasure to bestow Life Membership on Chris Timpson for his tireless and outstanding contribution to our sport of Athletics.
